Demonstration Alert: Tegucigalpa (Honduras), Political Protests and Traffic Disruptions Expected

September 13, 2024

Location: Tegucigalpa, Honduras

Event: The U.S. Embassy anticipates traffic to be disrupted in and around Tegucigalpa due to scheduled demonstrations, parades, and Independence Day celebrations on September 14th and 15th.  Rallies and parades on both days are expected to cause heavy traffic and road closures throughout the city – especially near the national stadium.  Outlying roads, including the CA-5 highway to the airport in Comayagua, may be affected.

Many events throughout the weekend at different locations in Tegucigalpa will reportedly be political in nature and the Embassy has advised its staff to avoid these gatherings.  The Embassy always discourages attending large gatherings, as even peaceful ones can unexpectedly turn violent with little or no notice.  U.S. citizens are advised to monitor local media for additional information, are encouraged to avoid unnecessary travel near these events, and are reminded to maintain awareness of their surroundings, as the situation may change quickly.

Actions to Take:

  • Avoid the parade and demonstration routes.
  • Avoid crowds and demonstrations.
  • Exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings.
  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Keep a low profile.
  • Review your personal security plans.
  • Have travel documents and identification up to date and easily accessible.
  • Carry proper identification at all times.
  • Have alternative transportation routes in mind.
  • Monitor local media and U.S. Embassy Facebook   and Twitter   pages for updates.  Be prepared to adjust your plans.
  • U.S. citizens who travel abroad should always have a contingency plan for emergency situations. Review the Traveler’s Checklist .
