Weather Alert: Countrywide (Honduras), Flooding from Tropical Storm Sara

LOCATION: Honduras

EVENT: The Honduran disaster response organization COPECO issued on November 14 at 12:00pm a 72-hour red alert for the northern part of Honduras including the Departments Atlantida, Colon, Gracias a Dios, and the Islas de la Bahia, which includes Roatan.  A red alert indicates maximum cautious should be taken. The National Hurricane Center  shows the path of tropical storm Sara which is passing along the north coast of Honduras.

There is flooding in the northern coast. Per the Honduran Civil Aeronautics Agency, the airports in Roatan, la Ceiba, and Tegucigalpa are temporarily closed. We recommend following the Honduran Civil Aeronautics Agency on social media for updates on airport operations. The bridge Saopin in La Ceiba is unpassable due to damage.

We recommend that you continue to monitor local conditions via  COPECO   and the National Hurricane Center at NOAA  and take appropriate actions such as:

ACTIONS TO TAKE:

  • Seek secure shelter.
  • Have travel documents up to date and easily accessible.
  • Prepare an emergency supply kit (ready.gov ).
  • Notify friends and family of your safety.
  • Visit the National Hurricane Center,  for updated storm tracking information.
  • Monitor guidelines issued by local authorities  and local media for updates.
