Demonstration Alert: Greece, Transportation Disruptions and Demonstrations Planned for February 28

Location: Athens, Thessaloniki, and locations throughout Greece 

 

Event: Transportation Disruption and Demonstrations Related to the Two-Year Anniversary of the Tempi Train Disaster. 

 

Strikes and demonstrations related to the two-year anniversary of the Tempi train disaster are planned for February 28, 2025.  Additional demonstrations may take place in major cities throughout Greece.  In prior years, some demonstrations have turned violent and led to the destruction of property.  There is the potential for the police to employ tear gas if a demonstration becomes violent.  Anti-riot engagements between police and demonstrators are possible.  U.S. citizens are advised to avoid areas of demonstrations and exercise greater caution around universities, Hellenic Train offices, and areas where demonstrations commonly take place, i.e. city squares, government buildings, etc. 

 

The Federations of Public and Private Sector Employees announced that they will participate in a 24-hour General Strike on February 28, 2025.  Additionally, the following strikes are scheduled to take place:    

 

  • Taxis will be on strike from 10:00 to 13:00. 
  • Airport Air Traffic Controllers will take part in the 24-hour nationwide strike.  Due to this strike, Aegean Airlines and Olympic Airlines will cancel and modify all scheduled domestic and international flights. 
  • Trains will be on a 24-hour strike.  
  • Ferry and boat employees will be on a 24-hour strike. 

The following demonstrations are scheduled for February 28, 2025: 

 

  • In Athens, demonstrations are scheduled in Syntagma Square at 11:00 a.m. 
  • In Thessaloniki, demonstrations are scheduled at the Venizelos Statue on Egnatia Street at 11:00 a.m.

Actions to Take: 

 

  • Avoid demonstration areas. 
  • Exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests. 
  • Be aware of your surroundings. 
  • Keep a low profile. 
  • Monitor local media for updates. 
  • Review your travel plans and contact your travel company for assistance.
