Security Alert: Frankfurt (Germany), Crime Trend of Thefts from ATMs Using Incendiaries or Explosives

Security Alert – U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Germany (July 14, 2023)

Location: Germany

EventThe U.S. Mission to Germany advises U.S. citizens of an escalating crime trend in Germany of thefts from ATMs using incendiaries or explosives to breach the ATM and steal money.  The ATM robberies tend to occur between the hours of 1-5 a.m. at ATMs with less robust security features, especially those in residential buildings in rural or suburban areas.  The blast radius from a typical ATM explosion is approximately 200 meters, though debris has been discovered as far away as 500 meters.

Actions to Take:

  • Remain aware of your surroundings and maintain a high level of vigilance when using ATMs, especially at night or in the early hours of the morning.

  • Be observant of the people and vehicles around you.  If something does not appear right, leave the area.

  • If you believe you are witnessing a crime, immediately remove yourself from the area and call the police (110).
