Message for U.S. Citizens: Finnish Independence Day Demonstrations

On Tuesday, December 6th, Finns will celebrate their Independence Day. Along with the revelry associated with the anniversary of Finland gaining independence from Russia in 1917, many Finnish groups use the day as a platform to conduct demonstrations in support of their various causes. While most of these will occur without controversy or conflict, others may attract counter-protests. In a few cases in the past, these demonstrations have devolved into physical clashes.
The Finnish police have dedicated record numbers of resources to monitor and control planned and unexpected demonstrations to ensure a safe Independence Day celebration. However, the Embassy recommends avoiding areas where these demonstrations are to take place, as outlined below.
If you find yourself intertwined in such a demonstration, the Embassy recommends moving away from the area as quickly as possible. If unable to do so, and you feel that your safety is in jeopardy, seek shelter where possible and call 112 for assistance.

- Siege 612 (right wing)
- 12:00-23:00 Kansalaistori (12/3 – 12/7)
- Independence Day Reception for poor people
- 12:00-20:00 Narinkkatori (12/6)
- Finland Awake (right wing)
- 16:00-18:00 Railway Station Square, march to Parliament (12/6)
- High School Students torchlight parade
- 16:00-18:30 Hietaniemi Cemetery, march to Senate Square (12/6)
- Helsinki Without Nazis (left wing)
- 16:30-19:00 Töölöntori, march to Narinkkatori (12/6)
- 612 Torchlight Parade (right wing)
- 18:00-21:00 Töölöntori, march to Hietaniemi Cemetery (12/6)
