Health Alert: Ethiopia, Increase in COVID-19 Cases

Health Alert – U.S. Embassy Addis Ababa (7 January 2022)

Location: Ethiopia

Event: COVID-19 Rates Spiking

Community transmission of the coronavirus in Ethiopia is widespread and accelerating rapidly. A record number of 56,706 new cases were reported from December 1 – December 31, 2021. According to the Ethiopian Public Health Institute, 35 out of every 100 people that tested for COVID-19 during this period tested positive.

The U.S. Embassy is unable to secure medical care for American citizens at private or public hospitals, nor can it provide medical care or vaccinations for private citizens. Maintain strict COVID-19 mitigation measures, such as frequent hand washing, social distancing, avoiding large crowds, and mask wearing. If you have not already been vaccinated, strongly consider obtaining the COVID-19 vaccination and booster shot.

· Check with your airlines regarding any updated information about your travel plans and/or restrictions. · Visit the Department of Homeland Security’s website on the latest travel restrictions affecting travel to the U.S.
