Health Alert: U.S. Embassy Malabo, Equatorial Guinea - April 15, 2020
Event: The Equatorial Guinea Ministry of Public Health has confirmed 51 cases of COVID-19 in Equatorial Guinea, including community transmission on the mainland and on Bioko Island.
On April 14, the Government of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea extended the COVID-19 containment measures through the end of the month, encouraging people to stay at home for all but critical functions. In addition, the new decree prohibited people from circulating freely, noting that “all districts are being placed in quarantine, prohibiting the circulation or flow of people or vehicles from one district to another.”
Per the decree: The complete isolation of all people is ordered, so that going out into the street is completely prohibited, except in situations of urgent need or force majeure, such as going to the health center, market or pharmacy, and to work, in which case they must wear face masks and gloves at all times, and carry credentials issued by the President of Neighborhood Community authorizing the movement, which will be issued free of charge.
All companies are urged to provide their employees with accreditations justifying their exit and entry in order to attend their jobs. (FULL TEXT)
The Department of State has issued a Global Level 4 Health Advisory for COVID-19. The Department of State is currently not organizing an evacuation of American citizens from Equatorial Guinea following the April 8 flight.
Members of the public are advised to consider whether non-essential medical treatment can be deferred given possibility of infection in hospitals and clinics
The CDC recommends the use of a cloth face covering to keep people who are infected but do not have symptoms from spreading COVID-19 to others. The cloth face cover is not a substitute for social distancing. The CDC continues to recommend that people try to maintain about 6 feet between themselves and others.
