Health Alert: Equatorial Guinea, Update to COVID-19 Restrictions

Event:  The Government of Equatorial Guinea officially confirmed an end to confinement measures in the main cities and announced the relaxation of many COVID-19-related restrictions beginning June 15, 2020. This first phase of downscaling included the reopening of the hotel and catering sector.  Bars, discotheques, and any other place of leisure, however, remain closed during the first phase.  Regarding air transport, all passengers coming from abroad will have to present upon arrival a certificate of negative diagnosis for the coronavirus through a PCR test, valid within the previous 48 hours.  (FULL TEXT)

If you do not have a valid and negative PCR test upon arrival, it is likely you will be sent to mandatory government quarantine and undergo COVID-19 testing at your own cost. If you are sent to a mandatory quarantine hotel, as soon as you are able to, you should email malaboconsular@state.gov with your contact details, name, and date of birth.

The Department of State has issued a Global Level 4 Health Advisory for COVID-19.  The Department of State is currently not organizing an evacuation of American citizens from Equatorial Guinea.  The last such flight was on May 8.  Per the June 15 government announcement of the first phase of reopening, domestic and international flights may recommence as long as arriving passengers show a PCR test result indicating they do not have the coronavirus.  Domestic flights resumed June 19.  International flights have resumed on an intermittent basis, and passengers should call local airline offices to confirm flight availability before booking tickets online.  In addition, the Government of Equatorial Guinea may impose additional arrival restrictions on short notice, as was done through this June 30 circular.  Passengers should also stay in close contact with the airlines based on flight schedules changing without notice.  Some airlines require a negative PCR test prior to boarding.

Members of the public are advised to consider whether non-essential medical treatment can be deferred given possibility of infection in hospitals and clinics.  The CDC recommends the use of a cloth face covering to keep people who are infected but do not have symptoms from spreading COVID-19 to others.  The cloth face cover is not a substitute for social distancing.  The CDC continues to recommend that people try to maintain about 6 feet between themselves and others.  For further information on COVID-19 and precautionary measures, please visit the links below.
