Wildfire Alert: Cyprus, Fast Moving Wildfire Prompting Evacuations

Location: Limassol District

 

Event: A fast-moving wildfire has prompted evacuations across multiple mountainous areas and communities in Limassol district as of the morning of July 24. The fire has destroyed numerous structures and claimed several lives and continues to be a threat to life and property. Republic of Cyprus President Christodoulides has urged people in affected areas to follow the instructions of experts and evacuate their homes. Local authorities are actively working to contain the blaze. An earlier wildfire near Paphos that forced evacuations has been contained.

 

Actions to Take:

  • Avoid the affected areas: Agios Amvrosios, Kyvides, Souni-Zanatzia, Agios Therapon, Potamiou, Malia, Vasa, Vouni, Koilani, Lofou, Pera Pedi, Omodos, and Monagri, as well as nearby campsites including Platres campsite, Pera Pedi campsite, and Agia Mavri campsite. Avoid mountain areas to the northwest of Limassol.
  • Monitor the local news for updates.
  • Follow guidance from the local authorities, such as Cyprus Police, Civil Defense, and the Fire Service.
