Local authorities are encouraging heightened caution around the Poás volcano due to recent increased volcanic activity.
On March 26, Costa Rican National Emergency Commission (CNE) has issued a yellow alert, recommending increased caution (the second out of four CNE alert levels) for Poás Volcano National Park.
The Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (OVSICORI) has issued an Orange Alert, recommending caution (the third out of four OVISCORI alert levels) due to increased volcanic activity, including moderate ash, substantial seismic activity, and substantial emissions of gases.
Please be advised that Poás Volcano National Park may experience periodic and unexpected closures. Visitors should check local alerts and the Park’s website before planning a visit.
Stay Safe and Informed:
- Stay alert and updated on Poás Volcano activity via the CNE and OVSICORI websites:

- If you do not feel well, seek medical attention.
- Inform your friends and family of your whereabouts. Remain in close contact with your tour operator, hotel staff, and local officials for evacuation instructions during an emergency.
