Security Alert: Kinshasa (Democratic Republic of the Congo), Potential Protest on June 1

A potential sit-in is planned at the Kinshasa headquarters of the Commission Electorale Nationale Indépendante (CENI) tomorrow, Thursday June 01, 2023, at 09:30 a.m.  CENI is located on Boulevard 30 Juin near the Gare Central in Gombe, Kinshasa, relatively near the U.S. Embassy.  Expect increased police presence in the areas around CENI on June 01, 2023.    

U.S. Citizens are advised to avoid the area around CENI as there could be police and/or military roadblocks, heavy traffic, and increased police presence. 

Actions to Take: 

  • U.S. citizens are reminded that demonstrations that may start peacefully have the potential to turn violent with little to no warning, and they are advised to avoid large gatherings, protests, and affected areas. 

  • Avoid crowds and demonstrations. 

  • Be aware of your surroundings. 

  • Monitor local media for updates. 

  • Review your personal security plans. 

  • Keep a low profile.
