Security Alert: North Kivu (DRC), January 24

Location: North Kivu, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) 24 January 2025

Due to an increase in the severity of armed clashes near Sake, North Kivu and likelihood of increased insecurity in the region, including in Goma, the U.S. Embassy in Kinshasa advises U.S. citizens to depart to a safer location while airports and borders are still open.

The U.S. Embassy in Kinshasa received reports of internet outages and increased presence of security checkpoints throughout Goma and near the border with Rwanda.

The Embassy advises U.S. citizens in North Kivu to review your personal security plans, ensure that your travel documents are up-to-date, and essential items are packed in bags that you can easily carry.

Due to the uncertain security situation in North Kivu, there are no plans for U.S. government-coordinated assistance for U.S. citizens as travel to North Kivu is restricted for U.S. government personnel.

If you need emergency assistance, please contact the Consular Section at the phone numbers below.
