Weather Alert: China, Super Typhoon Ragasa is approaching Guangdong, Hainan, Fujian, and Guangxi province

Location:  Southern China:  Guangdong, Hainan, Guangxi, and Fujian Provinces

Event:  Super Typhoon Ragasa is approaching Guangdong, Hainan, Fujian, and Guangxi provinces in Guangzhou’s consular district.  The super typhoon is forecasted to be the strongest typhoon of the season, with risks of torrential rainfall and flooding as it moves across southern China.

Beginning Tuesday, September 23 in the late evening, coastal areas of eastern Guangdong province, southern Fujian province, and eastern parts of the Pearl River Delta may experience heavy to extreme rainfall as the super typhoon approaches.

On Wednesday, September 24 in the early morning, the super typhoon is expected to make landfall somewhere near southwestern Guangdong province and northeastern Hainan province.  Torrential to extreme rain is expected along the Pearl River Delta, coastal areas of Guangdong province, and northern Hainan province.  Northern counties in Guangdong province may experience heavy to very heavy rain during this time.

On Thursday, September 25, early morning, the storm is expected to move toward southern Guangxi Province.

Coastal regions of Guangdong province, including Shenzhen, Zhuhai, and Chaozhou, may issue code red typhoon warnings, the highest typhoon warning level, indicating the potential for severe impacts, including structural damage and widespread disruption.  Schools, workplaces, production, transportation, and other industries are likely to be shut down in these situations

Guangzhou may issue an orange typhoon warning level, the second highest typhoon warning level, indicating the potential for localized structural damage and disruption to transportation and utilities.  An orange typhoon warning would result in the closure of schools in the city.

Travelers should expect significant disruptions to services and transportation in southern China during this time.
