New Years celebrations will take place overnight on December 31st around Cambodia, particularly in cities. U.S. citizens should expect large crowds, severe traffic disruptions, and the potential for increased crime around gatherings.
Road safety remains a principal concern in Cambodia. Historically during this time, including immediately before and after the official public holidays, there has been a higher-than-normal incidence of driving while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs and an increase in traffic fatalities.
Historically, there is an increase in petty crime (i.e., pickpocketing and phone snatching) in the days and weeks surrounding holidays. All U.S. citizens are advised to remain vigilant and to safeguard their personal belongings when outside and when using tuk-tuks or other forms of public or commercial transportation.
