Message for U.S. citizens: Demonstration Alert: Planned Protests in Sofia – March 14 - 15, 2024
Event: Vazrazhdane Protest at U.S. Embassy: Vazrazhdane is planning to hold a protest across from the U.S. Embassy on Thursday March 14, at 14:00. Authorities anticipate around 30-40 participants and for the protest to last no more than two hours. Bulgarian authorities do not expect any provocations.
Event: Football Protest: On Friday, March 15, from 08:30 – 11:30, football fans will protest in front of the Marinela Hotel during the Bulgarian Football Union Congress. Three hundred - 400 participants are expected.
Please anticipate road closures and an increased police presence in these areas. These events will likely result in delays, roadblocks, and in a general increase in normal weekday traffic throughout downtown Sofia. Please note that the demonstration times and road closures are subject to change.
Actions to Take:
Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly become violent.
Avoid areas of demonstrations.
Exercise caution if unexpectedly found in the vicinity of large gatherings or demonstrations.
Be aware of your surroundings.
Monitor local media for updates.
Keep a low profile.
