Demonstration Alert: Sofia (Bulgaria), Ukraine-Related Protest on July 19

Event:

 

On Wednesday, July 19, 2023, there will be a demonstration at the office of the Presidency in downtown Sofia beginning at or around 1830 (6:30 p.m.).  The demonstration is scheduled to conclude at 2030 (8:30 p.m.).  The protest is organized by the group “Hybrid War” and concerns events in Ukraine.

 

Bulgarian authorities report organizers expect two to three thousand (2,000-3,000) participants.

 

All U.S. citizens and their family members are advised to avoid areas impacted by this demonstration.

 

Anticipate road closures and an increased police presence in this area.  This may result in delays, roadblocks, and a general increase in normal weekday traffic throughout downtown Sofia.  Please note that the times and road closures are subject to change.

 

Actions to Take:

 

Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly become violent. 

Avoid areas of demonstrations.

Exercise caution if unexpectedly found in the vicinity of large gatherings or demonstrations.

Be aware of your surroundings.

Monitor local media for updates.

Keep a low profile.

U.S. Citizens are advised to call the police (#112), seek a safe location, and wait for assistance from the police
