Travel Alert – U.S. Embassy Belmopan, Belize (15-Jun-2022)
Alert: Exercise increased caution when participating in water-based activities
Exercise increased caution when participating in water-based activities, particularly during the rainy season when heavy precipitation can contribute to unpredictable conditions. Currents, depths, and obstructions can be variable following periods of sustained rainfall. Heed all instructions and signage provided by officials, tour guides, and site operators, and, in the absence of such written or verbal cautions, remain vigilant of risks.
On June 11 and June 12, two separate drowning incidents occurred at the Rio On Pools in Mountain Pine Ridge. The Belize Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change, and Disaster Risk Management has warned the public about the risks of swimming in Mountain Pine Ridge recreational areas where there are no lifeguards or other water safety professionals on duty. The Belize Forest Department is currently reviewing visitor safety protocols.
