Weather Alert: Hurricane Beryl currently remains a Category 5 hurricane as it moves across the Caribbean. Some weakening is forecast for later today, July 2. Beryl is projected to make landfall in northern Belize as a Category 1 storm as early as the evening of July 4. The two most densely populated areas of the country (Belize City and San Pedro) are expected to have significant flooding during peak periods of storm surge. Belize’s main North-South highway (Northern Highway) will likely be impassable from Belize City north to Corozal and along the East-West highway (Western Highway) east of Hattieville. Belize’s National Emergency Management Office (NEMO) will activate its national Emergency Operations Center (EOC) in Belmopan and its forward EOC in San Pedro. If Beryl remains on its projected path and grows stronger than a Category 2 hurricane, NEMO will order the evacuation of all outlying islands (Ambergris Caye/San Pedro, and Caye Caulker).
