Due to a planned demonstration and associated road closures in Gulshan and Baridhara, the U.S. Embassy temporarily suspended operations at the Embassy annex on December 6, 2024. Protests, either planned or spontaneous, can be a common occurrence in Bangladesh, especially in Dhaka and other urban centers. With the approaching Victory Day holiday and holiday season likely to attract additional crowds, the U.S. Embassy reminds U.S. citizens that large gatherings of any kind may be potential flashpoints for violence. The Embassy reminds U.S. citizens to employ good personal security practices:
- Avoid crowds and demonstrations.
- Be aware of your surroundings.
- Keep a low profile.
- Monitor local media for updates.
- Review your personal security plans and foster good security practices among your family members.
- Keep your cell phone charged and have other tools ready in case of emergency.
- Review the guidance found in the current Bangladesh Travel Advisory (state.gov) located on the U.S. Embassy Dhaka website.
