Demonstration Alert: Vienna (Austria), Large Protest and Restrictions Expected on February 16

DEMONSTRATION ALERT: U.S. EMBASSY VIENNA, AUSTRIA (FEBRUARY 16, 2024)

Location: Vienna 1st District

Events:

According to Vienna Police and open sources, there will be multiple protests by left-wing groups tomorrow evening, February 16, 2024, related to the Akademikerball that is associated with right-wing groups.

The Ball will take place at the Hofburg, and police will enforce a restricted zone around the Hofburg, Heldenplatz, and a portion of Herrengasse in the 1st district starting at 5:00 p.m. Ball guests with tickets and individuals with business inside the zone will be allowed to enter but they and their bags will be subject to search. The U.S. Embassy has recommended to its staff that they avoid the area if possible.

The largest protest group, with 300 – 500 estimated participants, will gather at the University of Vienna by Schottentor starting at 4:00 p.m. and begin marching counterclockwise along the Ringstrasse around 5:00 p.m., with Stephansplatz as the registered destination. This will require police to close a portion of the Ringstrasse as participants march along it and will result in public transportation service interruptions (i.e., no bus or tram service) along a portion of the Ring.

Police presence will be heavy and widespread traffic delays and disruption should be expected in central Vienna Friday evening and night. Details are subject to change as conditions require.

Vienna Police will announce any further restrictions via its Twitter account: https://twitter.com/LPDWien Public transportation updates are posted here: www.wienerlinien.at/betriebsinfo
