DEMONSTRATION ALERT: U.S. EMBASSY VIENNA, AUSTRIA (March 23, 2024)
Location: Vienna 7th District (Museums Quarter and Heldenplatz areas), and Vienna 1st District (Stadtpark Area).
Events:
Tomorrow, March 23, 2024, at 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., the Vienna Police estimate up to 10,000 people from multiple activist groups will gather at Platz der Menschenrechte in Vienna's 7th district to protest against extremism, racism and anti-immigration. At 2:30 p.m. the demonstration is expected to transition to a march to Heldenplatz with a scheduled end time of 7:00 p.m.
Additionally, on Monday March 25th, 2024, starting at 12:00 p.m. there will be a “Festival Against the Gas Conference” at Stadtpark in the 1st district. As a part of the festival, there is a demonstration scheduled for 3:00 p.m. Even though the gas conference is cancelled this year, the festival and demonstration are still expected to occur.
There will be a heavy police presence monitoring both events. Traffic disruptions and or delays are likely, especially in the vicinity of the Heldenplatz, Stadtpark and along the Ringstrasse.
Actions to take:
• Avoid the area of demonstrations.
• Be aware of your surroundings. If you see something that seems odd or out of place, immediately notify the nearest law enforcement officer and move away from the area.
• Always carry your cellphone, programmed with local emergency numbers; Austrian Police (133), Ambulance (144), Fire (122), Europe-wide emergency (112).
• Exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests.
• Follow the instructions of authorities and road signs regarding closures and detours.
• Monitor local media for updates.
• Keep a low profile.
