Event:
According to media reports, there is the potential for spontaneous election related demonstrations and counter-demonstrations starting Friday evening (September 27, 2024) and continuing throughout weekend in the First District. These possible flash protests (depending on vote results and trends) could be held by a variety of groups related to different political, social and environmental causes reacting to the national elections in Austria. Police will have a larger than normal presence throughout the First District to address any issues. Embassy staff have been advised to avoid demonstration areas if possible and not engage with demonstrators.
Actions to take:
• Avoid the area of demonstrations.
• Be aware of your surroundings. If you see something that seems odd or out of place, immediately notify the nearest law enforcement officer and move away from the area.
• Always carry your cellphone, programmed with local emergency numbers; Austrian Police (133), Ambulance (144), Fire (122), Europe-wide emergency (112).
• Exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests.
• Follow the instructions of authorities and road signs regarding closures and detours.
