Security Alert: Armenia, Heightened Tensions Around the Azerbaijan Border

Location:  Vicinity of borders with Azerbaijan, and additional locations listed below.

 

Event:  The U.S. Embassy in Yerevan is aware of reports of heightened tension around the border with Azerbaijan, including reported instances of Azerbaijani forces firing on non-military targets in Armenia.  The Embassy reminds U.S. citizens in Armenia that per the current travel advisory, in place since April 2024, U.S. Embassy employees and their families remain prohibited from any non-essential travel to the following locations: 


Gegharkunik region east of Vardenis; 
Syunik region east of Goris; 
Syunik region south of Kapan; 
Travel through Yerashk village in Ararat region is allowed, stopping is not. 


Do not travel to the border region between Armenia and Azerbaijan.  Be aware that some portions of the road may cross international boundaries without notice.
