Event: The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a Level 1 Travel Health Notice for the Western Equine Encephalitis Virus (WEEV) in Argentina. There are reports of confirmed and probable human cases of Western equine encephalitis virus (WEEV) infection in rural areas of several provinces in Argentina with WEEV activity in horses. Please see the map of impacted provinces here. WEEV is spread mostly by the bite of an infected mosquito and can cause severe disease.
CDC’s Level 1 indicates that individuals should practice usual precautions; please see list of potential actions to take below. Travelers should seek medical care immediately if they develop fever, headache, neck stiffness, photophobia, or confusion during or after travel and tell your healthcare professional you have been to an area with WEEV transmission.
