Event:  A general strike is planned for May 9, 2024 that may significantly impact government, transportation, and general services (i.e. public transport, flights and airport services, banking, hospitals, commercial activity, etc).

U.S. citizens should practice vigilance and be aware that transportation options throughout the country will be very limited during the general strike.

Consular services at the U.S. Embassy will remain open.

Actions to Take: 

• Monitor local media for updates.
• Reconfirm travel plans.
• Avoid areas of demonstrations.
• Exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests.
• Carry a photocopy of your U.S. passport or other valid identification.
• Be aware of your surroundings.
• Keep a low profile.
