Event: A taxi driver strike in Luanda protesting rising costs escalated into violence and looting on July 28. Protesters blocked roads outside the city center, including with burning tires and dumpsters, and vandalized some vehicles defying the strike. Looters subsequently targeted businesses in isolated incidents of vandalism and theft. The taxi strikes are expected to continue through Wednesday, July 30, although organizers have condemned the associated unrest and urged that protests remain peaceful.
Although unrest has reportedly diminished by the morning of July 29, the U.S. Embassy urges U.S. citizens to remain vigilant and limit non-essential movement within Luanda. Reports indicate protest activity and attempted road blockages near Via Expresso/Av. Fidel Castro earlier this morning.
Actions to Take:
- Avoid areas of demonstrations and roadblocks.
- Minimize unnecessary movements.
- Monitor local media for updates.
- Avoid crowds and demonstrations.
- Keep a low profile.
- Be aware of your surroundings.
- Review your personal security plans.
