Natural Disaster Alert: Nurgal (Dara Mazar), Shokai, Watapur, Manogai, Chapa Dara, and other areas (Afghanistan), A 6.0 Magnitude Earthquake Occurred in the Eastern Provinces of Kunar and Nangarhar

A 6.0 magnitude earthquake occurred in the eastern provinces of Kunar and Nangarhar, near the border with Pakistan, just before midnight on Sunday, August 31, 2025.  

All inquiries regarding U.S. citizens affected by the earthquake should be directed to AfghanistanACS@state.gov.

U.S. citizens are reminded that the Travel Advisory for Afghanistan  remains at level 4 (“Do Not Travel”) due to the risk of civil unrest, crime, terrorism, wrongful detention, kidnapping, and limited health facilities. U.S. citizens are also reminded that the U.S. Embassy in Kabul suspended operations in 2021 and that the U.S. government’s ability to provide routine or emergency consular services to U.S. citizens in Afghanistan is very limited.
