Security Alert: U.S. Mission to Afghanistan (from Doha, Qatar), February 27, 2026
Location: Kabul, Afghanistan
Pakistan launched airstrikes on Kabul, Paktia province, and Kandahar province on February 27, 2026, at 1:50 a.m. local time. According to media reports, Pakistani aircraft remained in Afghanistan airspace and continued to look for targets as of 9:00 a.m. local time. Media outlets have also reported fighting along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. Major border crossings between Afghanistan and Pakistan remain closed.
These developments underscore the extreme risk of remaining in or traveling to Afghanistan.
The U.S. Mission to Afghanistan reminds U.S. citizens that the Travel Advisory for Afghanistan remains at level 4 (“Do Not Travel”) due to the risk of civil unrest, crime, terrorism, wrongful detention, kidnapping, and limited health facilities.
As stated in the Travel Advisory, the U.S. government is unable to provide routine or emergency services consular services to U.S. citizens in Afghanistan. The U.S. Embassy in Kabul suspended operations in 2021.

Actions to Take:
- Do not travel to Afghanistan.
- Make plans to leave Afghanistan if you are currently there. If unable to depart via air travel, depart via the land border with Tajikistan or Uzbekistan.
- Do not attempt to depart Afghanistan by crossing the Iran border.
- Avoid all border areas with Pakistan.
- Monitor local media for updates.
- Have a personal security plan and maintain a low profile.
