Security Alert: U.S. Mission to Afghanistan (from Doha, Qatar), October 15, 2025
Location: Kandahar and Kabul, Afghanistan
Several media outlets have reported intense fighting along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border from October 11-15, including artillery exchanges and airstrikes in the Spin Boldak area of Kandahar. Several major border crossings between Afghanistan and Pakistan have been temporarily closed. There have also been reports of explosions in Kabul on October 15. While a 48-hour ceasefire was announced on October 15, effective 5:30 pm local time, the situation remains volatile and unpredictable.
These developments underscore the extreme risk of remaining in or traveling to Afghanistan.
The U.S. Mission to Afghanistan reminds U.S. citizens that the Travel Advisory for Afghanistan remains at level 4 (“Do Not Travel”) due to the risk of civil unrest, crime, terrorism, wrongful detention, kidnapping, and limited health facilities.
As stated in the Travel Advisory, the U.S. government is unable to provide routine or emergency services consular services to U.S. citizens in Afghanistan. The U.S. Embassy in Kabul suspended operations in 2021.
