Security Alert: Turkiye, Personal Safety and Security Awareness

Routine Message: Personal Safety and Security Awareness Tips

The U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Türkiye remind U.S. citizens to practice strong personal safety and security awareness. We encourage U.S. citizens abroad to register with the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program  and review the Traveler’s Checklist  along with other resources on the State Department’s Planning Your Travel  page. Information about safety and security in Türkiye is available on the State Department’s Türkiye Destination Information Page . In addition, we recommend the following personal safety and security practices:

  • Be aware of your surroundings and maintain a low profile. Wear culturally appropriate attire and avoid wearing attire that identifies you or your nationality.
  • Identify resources you may need in an emergency. These include nearby police stations, hotels, hospitals, and exits from buildings where you are visiting/residing. Create a plan of action. Know where you will go if you need help.
  • Avoid demonstrations. Do not take photos or videos of protests. Any gathering, even those intended to be peaceful, could turn violent.
  • Be mindful of who is around you and of any personal information you share, including online. Vary your daily routes and times to work or other common destinations.
  • If you are being followed or harassed, seek help at the nearest police station, hotel, or other public facility.
  • Stay alert for suspicious or unusual activity. If you see suspicious activity, immediately leave the area. Once you are safe, report it to police or other local authorities.
  • Remember that a natural disaster or security incident could disrupt mobile cellular service. Have a plan to communicate with and locate your loved ones if you lose cell phone service. Keep friends and family informed of your travel plans, whereabouts, and welfare.
