Security Alert: Nigeria, Crime Spikes During Holiday Season

Holiday Season Security Alert: October 8, 2025

Location:  Nigeria

Event: Historically, crime in Nigeria is more prevalent during the holidays as criminals target those with perceived wealth. The “ember season” from October through the end of the year is a time when armed robberies, carjackings, and kidnappings for ransom increase.  Maintaining your situational awareness, avoiding predictable routines, and reviewing general security precautions with your family can potentially reduce your chances of becoming a victim of crime.

Actions to Take:

  • Stay alert in public places, including at shopping centers, movie theaters, and places of worship.
  • Avoid displaying valuables or large amounts of cash.
  • Be vigilant when visiting banks or ATMs.
  • Use caution when walking or driving at night.
  • Do not physically resist any robbery attempt.
  • Keep your car and home doors locked, and do not leave valuables in plain sight.
  • Avoid predictable routines.
  • When driving, leave space around you in case you need to escape.
  • If taking taxis, use app-based transportation or a call-in taxi service.
  • Be aware of scams. Talk with your family about how to handle unusual phone calls or unannounced visitors.
