Health Alert: U.S. Embassy La Paz, Bolivia (February 12, 2026)

Location: Cochabamba and Santa Cruz departments

Event: The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a Level 2 – Practice Enhanced Precautions Travel Health Notice  for chikungunya in the departments of Cochabamba and Santa Cruz.

Chikungunya is a virus spread through mosquito bites. Symptoms appear 3-7 days after a bite by an infected mosquito.  The most common symptoms of chikungunya are fever and joint pain. Most people get better within a week; however, some can have severe joint pain for months to years following acute illness.

Actions to Take:

  • Visit the CDC page on Chikungunya  for additional information about the disease, including symptoms, prevention, and vaccinations.
    Refer to our list of local medical providers.
    Check with your medical provider if you have any questions regarding upcoming travel and vaccinations options.
    Seek medical care if you develop fever, joint pain, headache, muscle pain, joint swelling, or rash.
    Consider purchasing travel insurance  to cover accidents or illness overseas.
