Message for U.S. Citizens: Road Closures and Security for G-20 Summit: U.S. Consulate General Johannesburg, South Africa (November 19, 2025)
Location: Johannesburg, South Africa
Event: The 2025 G20 Leaders’ Summit and related activities will be held in Johannesburg from November 22–23, 2025. These events may result in traffic disruptions and an elevated security presence throughout Gauteng Province, particularly in Sandton, Rosebank, and central Johannesburg, as well as the entire area around the FNB stadium in Southwest Johannesburg.
Security and Traffic Impacts:
In preparation for the Summit, authorities have announced major road closures, rolling traffic stoppages, and restricted access zones around key venues, hotels, and transport corridors. Motorists should expect delays along major routes including the M1, N1, and N12 highways, as well as arterial roads leading to OR Tambo International Airport. Public transportation services, including Gautrain, may experience schedule changes or temporary route diversions. Please see the following link for road closures: Road Traffic Management Corporation on Gauteng traffic operations leading to G20 Leaders’ Summit | South African Government .
Demonstrations and Public Gatherings:
Civil society groups, labor unions, and advocacy organizations have announced plans to stage peaceful demonstrations in Johannesburg and Pretoria during the Summit period. While most are expected to remain lawful, large gatherings can disrupt traffic and public transport and may occasionally draw a heightened police response. U.S. citizens should be aware of large crowds, even those that appear peaceful.
Actions to Take:
· Monitor local media for updates on traffic disruptions and plan alternative routes.
· Expect delays at airport security screening and possible flight delays during this period.
· Avoid crowds and remain alert for petty crime.
· Exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests.
· Comply with local regulations.
· Carry proper identification, including a U.S. passport.
