Security Alert: Apia (Samoa), Embassy closed due to State of Emergency

To comply with the Orders of State of Emergency issued by the Government of the Independent State of Samoa, the U.S. Embassy in Apia will be closed on Thursday, December 5 and Friday, December 6, 2019.  Media report that all public and private businesses must remain closed on December 5 and 6, 2019, from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm.  Exceptions to this order are limited and include health and safety operations, the airport, and hotels.  

 

Please continue to monitor local and social media for updates, including the Government of Samoa's Facebook page and website.

 

Consular services scheduled for these two days will not be rescheduled.  Visa applicants scheduled for December 5 and 6, 2019, have the option to reschedule in Apia for February 2020 or to request a priority visa appointment at the U.S. Consulate General in Auckland, New Zealand, or the U.S. Embassy in Suva, Fiji.  Visas approved at appointments on December 4, 2019, can be picked up at 1:00 pm on Monday, December 9.

 

Actions to Take: 

  • Consult a medical professional to make sure your immunizations are up-to-date.
  • Carry proof of your MMR vaccination or immunity with you.
  • Visit the CDC webpage on the Global Measles Outbreak Notice and what you can do to protect yourself and immunization recommendations.
