Security Alert: U.S. Embassy in Abuja, IMN Planned Protests (March 5, 2026)

Location: Abuja, Federal Capital Territory

Event

The U.S. government cares about your safety and will continue to share up-to-the-minute information you need to make informed decisions about your safety.  The U.S. Embassy in Abuja informs U.S. citizens that the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) has announced its intention to conduct protests in Abuja.  Previous IMN-protests have resulted in violent clashes with Nigerian security forces.  The Embassy strongly recommends that all U.S. citizens in Abuja remain in their residences through Friday, March 6.

Embassy Abuja Operations

The U.S. Embassy Abuja will be closed for routine business until Monday, March 9.  The potential for violent protests remains highly unpredictable, and all U.S. citizens should exercise increased caution and maintain a low profile.

Actions to Take:

  • Avoid protests and demonstrations, keep a low profile, and stay aware of your surroundings.
  • Monitor local media for updates.
  • Pay close attention to communications from local officials.
  • Review your personal security plans and keep your cell phone charged in case of emergency.
  • Have travel documents up to date and easily accessible.
  • Familiarize yourself with emergency exits and egresses when you enter buildings.    Find a secure location within your residence or another safe building.  Have a supply of food, water, medications, and other essential items.
  • Vary travel routes and times to reduce predictability.

The Consular Section of Embassy Abuja is closed to routine services until Monday, March 9.
