Health Alert: Fiji, Higher Than Normal Case Counts of Dengue in New Caledonia

Location: New Caledonia

Event: Continued higher-than-expected number of Dengue cases per CDC.

CDC retained a Level 1 Travel Notice due to continued reports of Dengue in New Caledonia. (Global Dengue – Level 1 – Practice Usual Precautions – Travel Health Notices | Travelers’ Health | CDC ). Dengue is a mosquito-borne virus prevalent in tropical regions around the world. Symptoms include fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, rash, muscle and joint pain, and minor bleeding. Serious cases can be fatal and require hospitalization.

Actions to Take:

  • Remain indoors or in a screened or air-conditioned area during peak periods of peak mosquito activity.
  • If outdoors, wear long-sleeved shirts, pants and hat.
  • Consult the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for country health advisories or call Centers for Disease Control and Prevention | CDC  at 800-232-4636 or 404-639-3534.
  • Make contingency plans to leave.
  • Have travel documents up to date and easily accessible.
