Security Alert: Papua New Guinea, Pope's Visit to Papua New Guinea

Location: Papua New Guinea

Event: Pope Francis will visit Port Moresby and Vanimo September 6-9.  Tens of thousands of pilgrims are expected to visit for this event.  There will likely be extra demands on local infrastructure and resources.  Expect road closures from the Pope’s movement and plan your travel and alternate routes accordingly.  Consider stocking up on groceries and fuel in advance of the Pope’s arrival Friday afternoon.

As a reminder, personal security begins and ends with you. Good situational awareness accompanied with an adherence to the security best practices below significantly reduces your chances of becoming a victim of crime.

Actions to Take:

  • Avoid crowds and demonstrations.
  • Keep a low profile.
  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Make sure to use your alarms (home and vehicle) consistently.
  • Be mindful of your surroundings and any circumstance that may appear concerning.
  • Use caution when walking or driving at night.
  • When you drive, make sure all windows are up and doors locked.
  • When your vehicle is parked, make sure all packages or items are concealed.
  • When returning to your vehicles, keep your hands as free as possible and your car key at the ready.
  • Do not display signs of wealth, such as wearing expensive jewelry or watches.
  • Do not physically resist any robbery attempt.
  • Review your personal security plans.
  • Have travel documents up to date and easily accessible.
