Demonstration Alert: Expect Heavy Traffic for Guatemalan Independence Day Celebrations

SEPTEMBER 13, 2023

Location: Throughout Guatemala

On Thursday, September 14, 2023, and Friday, September 15, 2023, please expect heavy traffic on all roads throughout Guatemala due to Independence Day celebrations and activities.

On Thursday, September 14, 2023, there will be torch runs in Guatemala City and throughout the country.  In Guatemala City, these runs generally will start from 8:00 a.m. and originate from the Obelisco in Zone 10 with thousands of spectators in attendance.  The running groups will travel to various Departments on foot and with vehicle support.  Traffic should significantly increase after midday. On Friday, September 15, 2023, there will be a parade beginning at the National Palace in Zone 1 and ending at the soccer stadium in Zone 5.

As always, the timing, size, and duration of these activities can change. The celebrations can grow quickly in size and move from one location to another, thus potentially disrupting or impeding movement. The Embassy recommends that U.S. citizens be aware and vigilant.
