Event: There is an elevated risk of terror attacks in Mauritania directed at the U.S. Embassy and against U.S. citizens based on a recent threat directed at the U.S. Embassy on March 23, 2026. Targets may include, but are not limited to, the U.S. Embassy or places or areas where American citizens are known to congregate.
Actions to Take:
- Exercise vigilance in areas where protests have occurred.
- Monitor local media for updates.
- Be aware of your surroundings.
- Keep a low profile.
- Avoid being outside after dark.
- Exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests.
- Stay alert in areas frequented by Americans or foreign visitors.
- Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive alerts and help U.S. officials locate you more easily in an emergency.
