Health Alert: Liberia, Level 2 Travel Health Notice for Clade II Monkeypox

Location: Monrovia, Liberia

Event: The U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a Level 2 Travel Health Notice  for clade II Monkeypox in Liberia.

Action to Take:

  • Refer to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention page on Monkeypox.
  • Avoid close contact with anyone showing symptoms of monkeypox (e.g., skin or genital lesions).
  • Avoid contact with contaminated materials (clothing, bedding) and wild animals, especially rodents and non-human primates.
  • Do not eat or prepare bushmeat or use products derived from wild animals.
  • People at higher risk for severe disease (pregnant women, infants, people with eczema or weakened immune systems) should take extra precautions.
  • Seek medical care immediately if you develop a new, unexplained rash, with or without fever or chills.
  • Isolate and follow infection control measures if you are sick or suspect monkeypox.
  • Get the monkeypox vaccine ideally within four days, but up to 14 days since contact with the infected individual.
  • Get the monkeypox vaccine if you believe you are at high risk such as immunocompromised persons, close contacts and those that engage in high-risk sexual practices
  • Wash hands often with soap and water or alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
