The Embassy is aware of the January 29 French government announcement that the French borders will be closed for all travel to and from non-EU countries as of midnight on January 31 except for trips required by compelling circumstances. We are working to get more information about the practical effects of this order, and we will post additional information on our website as we receive it.
At this time, U.S. citizens and other travelers should prepare as if most travelers will be unable to fly between the United States and France — in either direction — for the time being. Travelers currently in France should be prepared to remain in France for an indefinite period of time while the French procedures are worked out. U.S. citizens who do leave France should plan for the possibility that they will not be allowed to reenter while the French restrictions remain in place.
All travelers should check with their airline about any changes in flight status.
If you are a U.S. citizen in France with an extremely urgent medical, family, business, or humanitarian need to travel that cannot be postponed, you should send an email to citizeninfo@state.gov including a description of the issue and an email address and phone number where the Embassy can reach you once more information about the French decision is available. All U.S. citizen travelers are also strongly encouraged to register with us at https://step.state.gov to ensure you receive our emergency messages and that we have current contact information for you.

- Email the U.S. Embassy at citizeninfo@state.gov if you have an extremely urgent medical, family, business, or humanitarian need to travel that cannot be postponed.
- Consult a medical professional if you have been in direct contact with an infected person within the past three weeks and have symptoms.
