Security Alert: Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), Large Crowds Expected at Réveillon/New Year’s Eve 2026

Location: Copacabana and other areas across Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Event: The City of Rio de Janeiro will host the annual Réveillon (New Year’s Eve) celebrations on December 31, 2025.  Local government and media reports estimate an expected 2.5 million people will join the festivities on Copacabana Beach, where many public celebrations will take place.

The U.S. Consulate reminds all U.S. citizens to use caution in large groups or where crowds have gathered.  Public events of any nature can unexpectedly turn violent without warning.  In case of an incident during Réveillon, U.S. citizens should immediately seek safety and, when conditions permit, move to an area away from the disturbance.

U.S citizens are encouraged to review Rio de Janeiro’s City Hall New Year’s Eve 2026 website  for comprehensive information on changes to public transport and traffic patterns near Réveillon sites.  The website also lists details of medical support services and contains a full list of schedules and locations of events throughout the city.

The COR.Rio app is an excellent source for real-time updates and information as well.  The app is available for download on Android  and iOS .

Social media accounts for perfil@operacoesrio, including X, Instagram, Facebook, Threads, and Bluesky, as well as the cor.rio channel on WhatsApp, will all provide real-time coverage of Réveillon.

Actions to Take:

  • Plan significant extra time to arrive at your destination.
  • Be prepared to pass security checkpoints to enter the beach area.
  • Remain vigilant during large celebrations and events.
  • Do not display signs of wealth, such as wearing expensive jewelry or watches.  Opportunistic crime is a critical issue during events like Réveillon.
  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Make contingency plans in case you are separated from friends or family during the celebrations.
  • Report any criminal activity first to local police (190) and then contact U.S. Consulate General Rio de Janeiro at the numbers or email listed below if you need assistance.
