Nauru Travel Advisory
The current U.S. Department of State Travel Advisory at the date of this report’s publication assesses that travelers should exercise normal precautions in Nauru.
Crime
Although Nauru does not have official ratings for crime from the U.S. Department of State, travelers should consider the criminal environment lower than in Suva, which the U.S. Department of State has assessed as being a HIGH-threat location for crime directed at or affecting official U.S. government interests.
The U.S. Department of State has not included a Crime “C” Indicator on the Travel Advisory for Nauru.
The crime emergency line in Nauru is 110.
Nauru has a low crime rate. However, visitors should not be complacent regarding their personal safety or the protection of valuables.
There are no areas of comparative concern to report.
Kidnapping Threat
The U.S. Department of State has not included a Kidnapping “K” Indicator on the Travel Advisory for Nauru.
There is minimal risk from kidnapping in Nauru.
Terrorism
The U.S. Department of State has assessed Nauru as being a LOW-threat location for terrorism directed at or affecting official U.S. government interests.
The U.S. Department of State has not included a Terrorism “T” Indicator on the Travel Advisory for Nauru.
There is no history of indigenous or transnational terrorism in Nauru.
Political Violence and Civil Unrest
Although Nauru does not have official ratings for terrorism from the U.S. Department of State, travelers should consider the environment similar to Suva, which the U.S. Department of State has assessed as being a LOW-threat location for terrorism directed at or affecting official U.S. government interests.
The U.S. Department of State has not included a Civil Unrest “U” Indicator on the Travel Advisory for Nauru. Civil unrest can develop quickly without prior notice, often interrupting logistics and services. Avoid demonstration activity, as even those planned to remain peaceful have the potential to turn violent.
Elections/Political Stability
The Nauruan government is a parliamentary representative democratic republic and does not have a formal structure for political parties; candidates typically stand as independents. Nauru’s politics are rather unstable, with 23 changes of administration between 1989 and 2021. Nauru held parliamentary elections in September 2022 which occurred peacefully.
Protests & Demonstrations
The presence of the Nauru Regional Process Centre, an offshore Australian immigration detention facility, remains a highly contentious issue in the region. Although protests regarding this issue are often located in Australia, protests have also occurred in Nauru in the past year. Avoid demonstrations and large crowds.
Anti-U.S./Anti-Western Sentiment
There is little direct anti-U.S. sentiment in Nauru.
Law Enforcement
The police force, under the Minister for Police and Emergency Services, maintains internal security and, as necessary, external security. The country has no military force. Civilian authorities maintain effective control over the security forces. Members of the security forces have committed few abuses. If abuses are reported, the Nauruan police has a Professional Standards Unit to investigate and address complaints of misconduct; call +674-557-2982 to report police misconduct.
Police Response
Report all incidents of crime to the local police authorities. Police have generally treated arrested or otherwise detained foreigners well.

Rule of Law, Arbitrary Detention, Official Harassment, Corruption, & Transparency
The U.S. Department of State has not included a Risk of Wrongful Detention “D” Indicator on the Travel Advisory for Nauru.
The Nauruan law provides criminal penalties for corruption by officials, and the government generally implements the law effectively. There are no recent reports of government corruption.
Cybersecurity
Nauru has made some advances in its cybersecurity roadmap. Since 2015, Nauru has regulated child pornography and illegal access to computers and program data. In 2018, Nauru Police Force officials with cooperation from the Australian Federal Police developed the Cyber Safety Pasifika campaign that seeks to educate the local populace on the dangers of the internet. There have been reports that Nauru has been blocking popular websites as a result. Exercise normal security precautions when using public computers.
Import/Export Restrictions
Nauru's customs authorities may enforce strict regulations concerning temporary importation into or export from Nauru of items such as foodstuffs, animals, and pornographic materials.
