Holiday Security Message and Embassy Closures
As the holiday season approaches, U.S. citizens should remain vigilant of their surroundings and practice sound personal security and situational awareness in tourist locations such as markets, transportation hubs, shopping malls, places of worship, and other public areas. Security measures throughout Europe remain heightened over the holiday season due to ongoing worldwide threats posed by transnational terrorist organizations and individuals inspired by extremist ideology. Visitors to congested and popular tourist areas should pay particular attention to their surroundings and always follow the instructions of police and emergency response officials. In addition, criminals can target distracted tourists and holiday shoppers through crimes of opportunity (pickpocketing, purse snatching, thefts of unattended cellphones).
Holidays bring a marked increase in traffic-related accidents involving alcohol. Please respect local driving laws and regulations and use caution when driving. Do not drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs, as local police will strongly enforce DUI laws during this period. Please note – the legal limit in Albania is 0.00.
U.S. citizens traveling to Albania should review the Country Specific Information at
travel.state.gov and enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for the latest travel advice and information.
