Holiday Season Security Alert – Mission Nigeria
Nigeria
Event:
The U.S. Mission in Nigeria reminds U.S. citizens that, historically, criminal activities in Nigeria, such as theft and kidnapping for ransom, increase significantly during the December holiday season. This includes pickpocketing and home burglaries, as criminals take advantage of increased travel and shopping to target victims. There is also a heightened risk of terrorism in Nigeria during the holiday season. Increasing your situational awareness, avoiding predictable routines, and reviewing general security precautions with your family can help reduce your risk.
Actions to Take:
- Stay alert in public places, especially at shopping centers, movie theaters, and places of worship.
- Avoid crowds and demonstrations.
- Do not display signs of wealth, such as wearing expensive jewelry or watches.
- Be vigilant when visiting banks or ATMs.
- Use caution when walking or driving at night.
- Be aware of your surroundings.
- Do not physically resist any robbery attempt.
- Familiarize yourself with emergency exits when entering buildings.
- Review your personal security plans.
