Security Alert: Abuja (Nigeria), Nigeria Labour Congress Protests

9 MINUTE READ
February 2, 2026

The U.S. Embassy in Abuja informs U.S. citizens that the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called for protests in Abuja tomorrow, Tuesday, February 3, 2026. If large protests do materialize, large numbers of police, roadblocks, and traffic disruptions in downtown Abuja are likely. Roadblocks, traffic congestion, and potential confrontations between police and protestors are possible in the areas near the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), Eagle Square and the Central Business District (see map below). The U.S. Embassy in Abuja recommends that all U.S. Citizens avoid these areas and take alternate routes. If you encounter roadblocks or groups of protesters on your way to work, you should immediately leave the area and find an alternate route or return home if you cannot safely travel to your destination.

Actions to Take:

  •        Avoid areas where protests are taking place.
  •        Avoid crowds.
  •        Exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests.
  •        Monitor local media for updates.
  •        Be aware of your surroundings.
  •        Keep a low profile.
  •        Review your personal security plans and keep your cell phone charged in case of emergency.
  •        Carry proper identification.
  •        Stay alert, including at shopping centers, movie theaters, and places of worship.
  •        Familiarize yourself with emergency exits and egresses when you enter buildings.
  •        Vary travel routes and times to reduce predictability.

The Consular Sections of Embassy Abuja and Consulate General Lagos remain open. Please monitor our website for updates.
