Health Alert: Tegucigalpa (Honduras), Extreme Water Shortage

Location: Tegucigalpa, Honduras

Event: Suggestions for Water Conservation

The city of Tegucigalpa continues to face an extreme water shortage.  The Honduran water authority SANAA is currently providing water to residences once per week, but with continued drought may make delivery even less frequent with little or no notice (SANAA Delivery Schedule).

Actions to Take:

·        Now more than ever, we recommend all U.S. Citizens to conserve water.  Conservation ideas include taking brief showers, turning off water while washing dishes and brushing teeth, and flushing toilets and washing clothes less frequently.  Current restrictions forbid the watering of lawns, cleaning sidewalks or patios, or washing cars with running water and violations of this restriction could result in a fine.

·        Monitor local media for updates.

·        If your residence has a cistern, check cistern levels daily, not only for usage monitoring, but also to quickly identify any potential leaks or other issues which could affect your access to water.  If you run out of water, there are private companies that will fill your cistern, usually within a couple of days.

·        If your residence does not have a cistern, consider purchasing water tanks, which can be found at most hardware stores in Tegucigalpa.

·        If you hear your water pressure pump kick on frequently or there is water loss when no water is being used, you may have a leak.
