Security Alert: Vietnam, Increased COVID restrictions

On January 28, Vietnam confirmed 82 new cases of COVID-19 community transmission in Hai Duong and Quang Ninh, which prompted transportation restrictions and social distancing measures in these provinces.  Quang Ninh suspended all road, bus, taxi, and ferry traffic to, from, and within Quang Ninh province from January 28.  All flights to and from Van Don Airport have also been suspended for 24 hours.

As of January 28, people in Chi Linh City, Hai Duong are required to remain at home except to buy food or medicine or for an emergency situation.  People in Chi Linh are required to wear masks, social distance, and should not gather in groups larger than two.  For further information, please visit the Vietnamese government’s website here

The U.S. Embassy Hanoi and Consulate General Ho Chi Minh City encourage U.S. citizens to abide by all Government of Vietnam directives, including mask wearing, social distancing, and hand washing guidelines.  U.S. citizens should refrain from gathering in large groups and monitor local news and government restrictions to avoid travel disruptions.  U.S. citizens are reminded that they are subject to Vietnamese laws and regulations while in Vietnam and that Government of Vietnam regulations regarding quarantine and travel restrictions in all parts of Vietnam can change with little notice.

We recommend U.S. citizens check the Embassy’s COVID-19 page daily for information and register or update their information with the Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP).
