Security Alert: Sao Tome and Principe (STP), Potential Election-Related Unrest

The U.S. Embassy in Luanda is closely monitoring the security situation in Sao Tome and Principe (STP). Political party conventions beginning in early April, the presidential election on July 19, and legislative elections on September 27 may prompt demonstrations or other political activity. The security environment may deteriorate without warning. Effective immediately, travel by U.S. government personnel to STP is restricted, and will require Chief of Mission approval.

The U.S. Embassy in Luanda will have limited capacity to assist with departure from country if the security situation deteriorates. The U.S. government does not maintain permanent diplomatic facilities in STP and has only limited access to provide services to U.S. citizens in STP, including U.S. citizens detained by authorities. Please see information on What the Department of State Can and Can’t Do in a Crisis .

Actions to take:

  • Monitor local media for breaking events and be prepared to adjust your plans.
  • Have evacuation plans that do not rely on U.S. government assistance.
  • Prepare a plan for emergency situations. Review the Traveler’s Checklist  and ensure easy access to documents and medications in case you need to leave on short notice or stay for longer than expected.
  • Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP)  to receive Alerts and make it easier for the U.S. embassy to locate you in an emergency.
  • Consider purchasing travel insurance before departure. Confirm with your travel insurance provider about evacuation assistance, medical insurance, and trip cancellation coverage.
  • Establish a communication plan with your family, employer, or host organization. Specify how you’ll confirm you’re safe, how often, and who you’ll contact first to share this information.
