Security Alert: Egypt, Update 1 (April 7, 2026)

U.S. Embassy Cairo advises U.S. citizens to closely monitor the news for regional developments related to military operations in Iran.  U.S. citizens should exercise caution and remain aware of their surroundings.

Due to high tensions in the region, the security environment remains complex and can change quickly.  Egyptian authorities generally offer effective security protection.  However, extremists and Iranian-aligned actors have expressed interest in planning and carrying out attacks in the region.  Iran and its aligned terrorist militias may intend to target universities in the Middle East.  Iran has specifically threatened American universities across the Middle East.

Security is generally present at potential targets, which include:

• Religious sites (mosques, churches, monasteries, and buses traveling there)
• Local government buildings, and diplomatic facilities (embassies)
• Tourist sites
• Transportation centers
• Shopping malls and restaurants
• Foreign and U.S.-affiliated organizations, including educational institutions
• Resorts
• Roadside checkpoints
• Urban areas in Cairo

Actions to Take:

• Be aware of your surroundings.
• Exercise caution and stay alert at locations publicly associated with the United States.
• Keep a low profile.
• Avoid all demonstrations and large gatherings.
• Monitor local media.
• Follow the instructions of local authorities.
